Andriy Shevchenko offered his heartfelt thanks to the people of Poland and Polish sporting stars Robert Lewandowski and Iga Swiatek after a surprise visit to meet children who have fled the horrors of war in his home country.
In his role as ambassador for Laureus Sport for Good, the former Ukraine captain and head coach visited a summer school in Warsaw that provides a safe haven for young Ukrainian refugees.
World number one Swiatek organised a charity tennis match on Saturday – ‘Swiatek and friends for Ukraine’, at which Shevchenko was a special guest, while Barcelona striker Lewandowski has been a vocal supporter of Ukraine and a long-time advocate for refugees.
This season Lewandowski will even wear a Barca shirt bearing the UNHCR logo – the United Nations’ main agency for refugees.
