Shakira and Jennifer Lopez starred in an iconic Latin-themed halftime show at Super Bowl LIV, however, friction between the Colombian artist and the Puerto Rican singer has some history.
In a pre-Super Bowl interview, Jennifer Lopez and Shakira sat down in front of two female hosts to talk about their historic participation and the moment Jennifer Lopez started speaking in Spanish, Shakira made a couple of grimaces, drawing a smile as her gaze pointed out of the cameras’ focus.
“When they (my parents) heard that (I would sing in the Super Bowl)… the first call I made was to my mom and dad because they are super Jets fans, New York Jets fans,” Jennifer Lopez tried to accommodate her thoughts in Spanish.
“Every Sunday we were since we were little (watching the Jets), I remembered the so, so, for them this is the Super Bowl,” said Jennifer Lopez with many failures to speak in Spanish.
However, Shakira can be seen grimacing as Jennifer Lopez tries to string words together in Spanish.”That I, yes daughter I am there, I am representing women, Latinas, representing our community, our energy there, I think the show we are going to put on is something that Shakira, very beautiful and me too. JLo very powerful,” JLo continued as she and Shakira began to laugh.
The Super Bowl LIV performance was a challenge for both because of the short amount of time the artists had to put together their show, this is how Shakira described it.
“The time we have is very little to be able to express what we want,” Shakira mentioned. “In addition, a musical repertoire of many years, we have had to condense it and make a summary, I think it will be a journey through mine and Jennifer’s repertoire.”
