Novak Djokovic says he is excited to be at the Laver Cup as he is looking forward to being teammates with three familiar faces.
Djokovic, 35, is set to make his second Laver Cup appearance this week. On Team Europe, Federer is set to be joined by Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
This year’s Laver Cup edition will be marked by Federer’s retirement from tennis. “Great to be here, exciting, full of emotional moments on and off the court, particularly for Roger. It’s exciting, it’s great to be here, probably once in a lifetime to be in a team along with Rafa, Roger and Andy, three of my biggest rivals,” Djokovic said, per Sportskeeda.
Djokovic set to be a part of Federer’s final tournament
The Djokovic and Federer rivalry will forever go down as one of the greatest rivalries in tennis history. Now, they are set to be on the same team and hoping to lead Team Europe to their fifth victory over Team World.
Ruud, who is now the second-ranked player in the world, admitted that it is extremely excited to be teammates with the four players he grew up watching. “It’s going to be so special this year, having the biggest four tennis players in my childhood,” Ruud said.
“It’s going to be an honor. Probably going to be a bit nervous when I’m out there playing in front of them, but I’ll do my best and I’m very happy to be able to represent Europe for this year’s Laver Cup in front of a crowd full of cheerful fans, and a European bench of legends”.
Unfortunately, it’s unclear for how much Federer will play this week. Also, there is even a chance Federer doesn’t even play this week as his team has suggested that his health comes at first place.
