28-year-old Bernarda Pera should set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 31st after beating Tatjana Maria in straight sets on Friday but it would be one of the biggest upsets of the year to see her reach the round of 16. World number one Iga Swiatek conceded just five games to Julia Grabher on Friday to make it five wins on the spin after she defended her Stuttgart Open title last week and she looks the solid favourite to lift the Madrid title for the first time next Saturday.

Whilst there has been increased competition for the Pole on tour this season Swiatek remains the out-and-out best on her favoured clay, on which she won her first and third Grand Slam titles at Roland-Garros in 2020 and 2022. Back Swiatek to win in straight sets.
