Williams possesses a stature that would be considered relatively tall for the average woman in a non-sporting context.
However, within the competitive realm of tennis, these measurements place her on the shorter side compared to many of her rivals throughout her career.
In certain situations, height can be an advantage, but Williams makes it cleat that it isn’t everything. Power, speed and agility were what made the 41-year-old successful.
An user once tweeted, “I’m damn tired of people saying that Serena Williams’ height and build gives her an unfair advantage over other players as if male tennis players don’t all come in different heights and weights and it’s literally never brought up as an issue.”Another user expressed, “Sport has weight categories in martial arts, usually for safety reasons. Height and weight categories don’t give females a chance.”
Founded in August 2022 by four Haitian American women from Miami, the Slice Girls have begun to carve their own niche in a sport historically reserved for the white elite. Mostly women of color participate in their five weekly training sessions and monthly clinics at Allapattah’s Moore Park. And as South Florida continues to celebrate the U.S. Open victory courtesy of Delray Beach’s own Coco Gauff, Slice Girls embodies the very same trait that the 19-year-old and the Black tennis greats before her stood for: inclusion.
