Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes working on behind-the-back passes again

The Lessons Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs Learned From Their Weirdest Season

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is continuing to practice an impressive type of throw at training camp.

We’ve seen Mahomes throw a number of unique passes during games, ranging from his patented no-look pass to his left-handed passes to his underhand tosses. Back in 2020, Mahomes was spotted working on a behind-the-back pass during training camp. Unfortunately, he never had an opportunity to break this type of pass out during a game that season.

Training camp rolls around in 2021, and again, Mahomes practiced the behind-the-back throw. It was the same situation during the season, though. He never had the opportunity to use this type of throw on the field in an actual game.

This year, Mahomes continues to work on the behind-the-back pass during training camp. KSHB-TV’s Aaron Ladd caught a video of the pass and the NFL shared the video on their Twitter channel. In this particular drill, Mahomes handed a ball off to rookie RB Isiah Pacheco. He is then thrown another ball which he, in turn, throws behind his back to a receiver who had run a route. The drill seems to have a purpose besides making for a viral video, focusing on handoffs, reaction time and accuracy.

Could this finally be the year that we see Mahomes master the behind-the-back pass and shock the NFL world during a live game?
