Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker urged men to ‘fight against cultural emasculation’ and claimed women are destined to be ‘homemakers’ while giving a commencement speech over the weekend at a small Kansas college.
Butker’s speech was full of his conservative views, not only on gender roles, but on abortion and vaccines as well.
Butker gave the speech at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, about an hour northwest of Arrowhead Stadium.
The three-time Super Bowl champion has become more vocal in recent years with his personal beliefs.
His beliefs included wearing a tie to the Chiefs’ Super Bowl celebration at the White House last year with a pro-life Latin phrase on it. Butker’s views are in opposition with President Joe Biden’s pro-choice policies.
‘To the gentlemen here today, part of what plagues society is this lie that has been told to you that men are not necessary in the home or in our communities,’ Butker said over the weekend.
‘As men, we set the tone of the culture, and when that is absent, disorder, dysfunction and chaos set in,’ Butker continued. ‘This absence of men in the home is what plays a large role in the violence we see all around the nation.’
‘… Be unapologetic in your masculinity. Fight against the cultural emasculation of men. Do hard things. Never settle for what is easy,’ Butker continued.
Butker then touched on his beliefs about a women’s role in society, comparing it with his views on masculinity.
‘I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolic lies told to you. Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world,’ Butker said.
‘I can tell you that my beautiful wife Isabelle would be the first to say her life truly started when she started living her vocation as a wife and as a mother.,’ Butker added. ‘I’m on this stage today, able to be the man that I am, because I have a wife who leans into her vocation.’
‘I’m beyond blessed with the many talents God has given me, but it cannot be overstated that all my success is made possible because a girl I met in band class back in middle school would convert to the faith, become my wife, and embrace one of the most important titles of all, homemaker,’ Butker concluded.
Butker has been the Chiefs starting kicker since 2017 and converted the game-winning field goal in last year’s Super Bowl against the Eagles.
